How To Make Elephants Fly

posted in: Blog, jeni 0

Hi, it’s Jeni with some adorable flying elephant cards! There is something about elephants that I just love. I created my own cloud stencils to add the sky background for these cards and had some fun finding ways to make my elephants fly. All the supplies I used to make these cards are listed and linked to The Little Paper Tree shop at the bottom of this post. Every orders earns loyalty points too. You can check how many loyalty points you have in your customer account.  Last month was our first YouTube birthday! And we reached over 100 subscribers so we are able to have our own custom URL. I created both the backgrounds the same way. I diecut some regular printing paper with two of the Puffy Cloud border dies to make my own stencils. I worked on smooth Bristol card and lightly ink blended Salty Ocean Distress Ink. Starting from the bottom of the card and working my way up to create the puffy cloud look.  I used a light amount of Blueprint Sketch Distress Ink to add some more dimension.  For the rainbow balloon card I spritzed on some water and blotted it dry after 10 seconds.

I stamped and coloured the standing elephant from the Elephant of Surprise stamp set, and coloured it with 902 Natural Grey Zig marker and a water brush.  I added the marker where I wanted to shading to be.  Where his ears meet his head, where his arms meet his body and the top of his legs.  I stamped a bunch of balloons from the same stamp set and coloured this in rainbow order.  I didn’t want this card to be too girly so I used two shades of blue instead of pink.

The colours I used on the balloons are 24 Wine Red, 50 Yellow, 70 Orange, 41 Light Green, 36 Light Blue, 30 Blue and 80 Violet. I coloured the balloons on the right hand side and used a water brush to pull the colour out.  I diecut all the images with the coordinating dies.  To make sure that all the balloons go in the right place I used foam tape behind the elephant and adhered the balloon strings to the foam tape. Making sure that all the balloon string ends would be hidden and put some in front of the others.  I added little dots of liquid glue behind the balloons and adhered the floating elephant to the background sky.  For the sentiment I heat embossed “Age is Irrelephant” and “When you look this good” in white onto black card, and adhered it to the card with foam tape.Heffy-Doodle-Elephant-The-Little-Paper-Tree

For the card above I created the background the same way with Distress Ink and added some water droplets.  This elephant is perfect for looking like he is flying through the air.  I decided to use the balloons from an Avery Elle Wild Birthday set and used my beloved Zig markers to colour all the images.  I used 91 Light Grey for the elephant, and 53 Yellow Green, 70 Orange and 52 Bright Yellow for the balloons and blended the colours out with an Aqua Flow waterbrush.  I stamped the sentiment on the bottom cloud and placed my elephant on the card, and adhered my balloons. I placed a dot where his trunk is curved and where his tail is so I could draw a black line to connect the balloons to the elephant.  Then adhered the elephant to the card.

These were fun cards to make! I will add both to card bases and they are ready for use. There are coordinating dies for all the Heffy Doodle stamps – Janet and I made the decision not to keep these in stock and only order the dies when requested. We are a small business with a small warehouse and it is every easy to run out of space.
