Watercoloured Snowman Shaker Card by Jeni

It’s still interactive month here at the tutorial blog, and since I love love love making shaker cards I had to share this one with you.  The snowman/women in Frosty Friends stamp set by Avery Elle always tell me to make shaker cards with them and I have to listen to my stamp sets! I only used 3 Liquid Watercolours and mixed my own colours to get more Christmassy shades.

I have all the supplies listed at the bottom of this post – clicking on any green word will take you to the that product in the shop.  Click HERE to see the other interactive cards, and HERE to find more inspiration using this stamp set on the blog.

The general idea I had for this card was not a shaker card.  I stamped both of the Snow People with Catherine Pooler Midnight Ink onto Bristol smooth card and used the Avery Elle Liquid Watercolours to colour them.  Putting one or two drops of the colour into a palette and used an AquaFlow waterbrush.

  • To get the red shade I mixed a tiny amount of Sapphire with Cherry to darken the red slightly.
  • There isn’t a dark green available so I mixed Sapphire and Fizz to make this shade.
  • And for the black hat – I mixed the green colour from the Sapphire and Fizz with Cherry.

I painted a light coat of colour first and added more layers to get the depth of colour I wanted. Making sure each layer was completely dry first so no colours would run into each other.  When they were completely dry I fussy cut them out right up to the stamped line.

Embossed Background

For the background of the card I stamped the three “Merry” twice to create a background with Versamark and heat embossed in white embossing powder.  I added some water all over the background and dropped on Sapphire using the waterbrush to move the colour to cover the whole background, and left some edges with a harsh water line.  I left this to dry and used a damp paper towel to buff off the colour from the embossed areas.

Shaker Card

At this point I wasn’t sure I was going to make a shaker card but Mom had the Postage Stamp dies out on her desk so I diecut the largest Postage Stamp die from the background.  Now I knew I had to make a shaker as I had the frame.  To make putting the whole card together easier I held the frame in place on a card base and adhered the inside piece flat to the card base.  I trimmed some acetate to fit behind the frame and adhered it to the frame with the eighth of an inch Scor Tape.  The Snow People would look weird if they were just floating so I diecut a hillside to adhere to the inside of the shaker window. I adhered them both to the front of the acetate.

Acetate Frame

On the back of the acetate I added one layer of foam tape all around the frame – leaving no gaps and along the hill and around the Snowmen. I can use foam tape to stop the shaker bits from falling behind them since the sequins and beads wouldn’t be seen.  The sequin shaker mix I used is the Ocean Mix by Little Things by Lucy.  I love that these little packs have a mix of different sized sequins, confetti pieces and beads.  The Ocean mix went better with the Sapphire colour of the background.  I did want to use the Artic Skies mix.

Finishing The Card

I added the sequins to the card base, removed the backing paper from the foam tape and adhered the frame to the card base.  With only one layer of foam tape the sequins don’t move much but they stay up in the ‘sky’. I really need to challenge myself and make a one layer (non-shaker) card with this stamp set.
